During the first week of this past September in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC), our very own Lady Lions swept all the awards. Kali Shaw the 5’11 senior out of Meadows Place, Texas received Attacker of the Week for the second week in a row. Shaw is ranked #4 in the nation in kills per game at 4.97, #14 in total kills at 144, and #17 in hitting percentage at .361%. Celi Bruce received Defender of the Week. The 5’6 senior out of Waxahachie, Texas has individual rankings in two categories. Bruce ranks #14 in digs per game with 5.86 and #39 in total digs with 170. Sophia Ivy receives Setter of the Week for the second week in a row as well. Ivy the 5’10 junior out of Round Rock, Texas ranks #5 in assists per game with 11.00 and #23 in total assists with 319. The SAGU Lions had a huge weekend for the program defeating OLLU on Friday night in 3 sets. The Lady Lions also beat Georgetown who are ranked 17th in the nation. Last week the Lions received 44 votes for national rankings in the NAIA and are ranked as #1 in the conference.
Freshman soccer player Melissa Navarro out of Kyle, Texas received Offensive Player of the Week for the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC). Navarro had a stellar weekend by scoring 4 goals on the Texas College Steers helping give the Lions an 8-3 victory.
Zackery Hammond, a freshman from Corsicana, Texas became SAGU’s first male Runner of the Week and set the school’s record in the 8,000 meter race with a time of 25 minutes and 56.1 seconds.
NCCAA weekly honors were announced on September 3 rd with the Lions having three members apart of the nationally voted awards. No other school in the nation had more than two athletes for the weekly honors. These three student athletes were National Volleyball Player of the Week, Kali Shaw with her weekend numbers of 5.15 kills per set, a hitting percentage of .496%, and 3.62 digs per set. Next is Zackery Hammond, who received National Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week with his 4 th place finish at the DBU meet and a time of 25:56.1 seconds for the 8k race. Rounding out the last is Marco Mathews, a senior linebacker from Maypearl, TX who received National Defensive Football Player of the Week. Mathews had a huge pick 6 against Austin College to secure the Lion victory (37-28) to go along with 6 tackles.
