October 4, 2018 | Blake Cochran

The Texas College Steers from Tyler, TX , come to Waxahachie , October 6th in seek of their first victory for the 2018-2019 season. The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football team is starting to peek at the right time after winning three of their past four games and coming off of a big win against Ottawa University . The Lions need a win to put them near the top of the conference standings, and the Steers need a desperation victory to give their season hope. The official game time is set for 6 pm.

This should be a fun game to watch as the Lions offense is clicking in the air and the Steers have one of the better pass defenses in the NAIA . The Steers rank 1st in the nation for opponents first downs, 2nd for pass defense with an average of 122.5 yards per game, 5th in sacks (4.00), and 6th for pass defense efficiency (86.0). On the other side, SAGU is 16th for total pass offense with 1383 yards, 18th in pass offense per game (276.6), 21st in total scoring offense (176), and first downs per game with 22.

The Steers are a run-heavy team with 65% of their plays being on the ground with junior running back, Carlos Mosby getting most of the touches. He carried the ball 32 times for a total of 161 yards and one touchdown. Vontyne Williams is a dual-threat quarterback who has thrown the ball 45 times this season for 248 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. On the ground, he has 125 rushing yards and one touchdown on 25 attempts. Their lead receiver is a sophomore, John Brown Jr . with 196 receiving yards and a touchdown from his seven catches. Defensively, they are led by O’Shea White, Malik Guillory , and Datrel Davis who all have 10 plus tackles each. Guillory also has two sacks, and Davis has 1.5 sack to go along with a 16-yard interception return. The Steers don’t have a great record but are moving in the right direction by getting better each week and a team to not be taken lately.

SAGU has dominated this matchup in the recent years; Texas College hasn’t beat the Lions since the 2010-2011 season. The past four games the Lions have outscored the Steers, 208-56 and have scored 45+ points in each of those games. CJ Collins is 2nd in the conference for total offensive yards with 1381 and should have another big game Saturday. Michael Bledsoe is also 2nd for total rushing yards to give the Lions a balanced game plan. Receiver, Samuel Northey leads the SAC is every category; receptions, yards, yards per game, and touchdowns. Defensively, the Lions have five of the top 20 tacklers in the conference: Tori Williams (1), Marco Mathews (12), Landon Jones (14), Keandre Belcher (16), and Coby Roach (19) .
