Over the weekend, the Lady Lion volleyball team kept it rolling in Sooner Athletic play as they defeated John Brown University who has been getting better and better each week. They defeated the 3rd place Golden Eagles in 4 sets in Waxahachie by a way of 25-17, 25-20, 23-25, and 25-21. After the game, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) lions stay in 1st place with a 16-1 overall record and a conference record of 8-0. The rest of the top five rounds out with OCU in 2nd (7-1), TXWU in 3rd (6-2), JBU (5-3), and Wayland Baptist University in 5th with a 5-3 record.

SAGU stayed consistent with multiple hitters getting kills throughout the match, Kali Shaw finished the day with a double-double, 15 kills and 14 digs. Suzanny Figueiredo did the same with an impressive stat line of 19 kills and 17 digs. Sophia Ivy and Celi Bruce had 54 assists combined, Ivy with 49 and Bruce with five to go along with her 19 digs.

Coach Moore on the Lady Lions weekend play, “Going 2-0 this week and adding a forfeiture in that mix moves us to 16-1 and 8-0 in conference play. We had some great defense from our front row. Both of our middles, Maddie Hartline and Jancee Akers are now in the top 10 in the conference in blocks. Celi had a great week as well; she is leading the conference in digs and closing in on the all-time digs record. Suzanny had a huge week averaging double digits in kills and in digs and Kali Shaw averaged a double-double, as well. Setter, Sophia Ivy has found herself moving to number 3 in the NAIA in assist.”

SAGU has two big conference roads next weekend as this travel north to take on USAO and Mid-American Christian University . USAO sits in 7th place and MACU is in 9th, as we know any conference road win is a huge advantage towards the end of the year. The Lions look to take advantage of these road games and stay put in 1st place after their Oklahoma trip. USAO will be on 9/28 at 7 pm, and MACU will be 9/29 at 1 pm.

More words from Coach Moore, “We are close and improving. We have a long way to go, but these kids are some the hardest working kids I have ever coached. We have the potential to be pretty good. We are very proud of where we are right now, but know we still have a lot of improving to do.”
