Waxahachie, Texas- September 21, 2015- For the second time this season, three Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football players have swept the Central States Football League (CSFL) Player of the Week honors.  Senior defensive back Shakeem Taylor was named Defensive Player of the Week.  Junior kicker Chadd Dearen and sophomore quarterback CJ Collins were each picked for the second time.

Offensive Player of the Week CJ Collins led the Lions to a 38-24 victory over Howard Payne University.  He threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns, completing 17-of-29 passes.  Currently, Collins is leading the CSFL in passing, averaging 247 yards per game.

“CJ continues to play with confidence,” says head coach Frank Tristan , “This past week he threw the deep ball with a lot of accuracy.  He continues to improve each week and that shows how coachable he is, especially with a new offense this year.”

Dearen hit a 42-yard field goal and was a perfect 5-of-5 on PAT’s. In addition to the eight points he scored, Dearen had seven punts for 242 yards, averaging 34.6 yards per punt, with a long punt of 76 yards. Dearen averaged 43.3 yards on seven kick offs.

“Chadd is always working to perfect his craft in his kicking.  We ask a lot of him, handling all of our kicking duties and he does a great job,” says Tristan.

Taylor picked off a pass for a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown during a pivotal point in the fourth quarter to help seal SAGU’s victory. The senior defensive back picked up a total of seven tackles, four of which were solo stops. He also added two pass break-ups.

Tristan believes Taylor is very deserving of the award, “Shakeem is a tremendously hard worker who practices despite injury.  It’s always great when one of your best athletes is also your hardest worker.”

The SAGU Lions are now a perfect 3-0 for the season.  Saturday, September 26, 2015 SAGU will travel to Seguin, Texas to play Texas Lutheran University.  TLU is 3-1 for the season.
