Waxahachie, Texas- February 12, 2016- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) baseball team is continuing their sweep of home stand victories.  The Lions won both games of the opening doubleheader against Kansas Wesleyan , 6-4 and 14-10.  SAGU is now 8-2 on the season.  Kansas Wesleyan is now 1-4.

The beginning of game one started out in KWU’s favor.  The Coyotes scored two runs in both the third and the fifth innings.  In the bottom of the fifth, KWU was in the lead 4-0.

“Offensively our guys battled a tough pitcher in game one and eventually found a way to grind some runs out to give us a big six run inning in the fifth to put us up,” explains head coach Sam Blackmon .

As Blackmon said, the fifth inning was huge for the Lions.  The first two batters were hit by a pitch and the next loaded the bases off of a walk. Griffin Glenn reached first on the fielder’s choice, scoring Carson Conarty . Raul Castro and Eric Hagstrom both got a hit which drove in one run each. Maverick Keffer got a well-timed double to left field, driving in two RBI’s.  SAGU scored six runs off of four hits and had two left on base.  At the end of the fifth, SAGU was ahead 6-4.

SAGU’s Jacob Keitner pitched six innings with three strike-outs, 11 hits and four runs. Carson Conarty came in relief for the final inning, striking out one.

Eric Hagstrom led the Lions offensively in game one.  Hagstrom was two for three with one run and one RBI.

In game two, Brandon Ventura started on the mound and pitched five and two/thirds inning.  Ventura had two strike-outs with eight hits and six runs. Collin Gifford pitched one and one/third innings.

In the bottom of the first, SAGU got three runs right away. Josh Terry scored on a wild pitch.  Raul Castro singled to center, scoring Jesse Chelette . Eric Hagstrom grounded out to third, scoring Griffin Glenn in the process.  The Lions scored three runs off of four hits.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, SAGU scored six runs off of four hits.  The Coyotes had one error.  Raul Castro doubled to deep left center, scoring Josh Terry and Jesse Chelette .

In the lead-off position, Josh Terry went two for five with three runs.  Raul Castro was three for five with four RBI’s.

The Lions will close out the home stand on Saturday, February 13, 2016.  The  first game of the doubleheader starts at noon.
