Muskogee, Oklahoma – April 8, 2016 – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) softball team split a doubleheader against Bacone College . This was SAGU’s second Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) victory this season. Bacone is currently 6-30 overall and 3-11 in the SAC.
Game One (L 1-6)
SAGU struggled in getting their offense going in game one. The Lady Lions were able to score their lone run in the top of the sixth.
SAGU’s Ashley Abair and Kaitlyn Canales both made it on base after being hit by a pitch. Ashlyn Stanfill singled to right field, loading the bases. Amber Gignac singled to center, scoring Abair. The Lady Warriors picked up three outs while stranding three on base.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bacone hit four doubles in a row, scoring four runs in the process.
Hannah Lee pitched five and one/third innings for the Lady Lions. Lee had one strike out while allowing 12 hits. Ashley Abair came in relief and pitched two/third of an inning.
Gignac went two for three and Ashley Nop went two for four at the plate.
Game Two (W 7-3)
With the difficulty SAGU had in scoring in game one, they had no problems in game two. “Kelsey (Coburn) and Kristin (Stringer) had back to back home runs in game two and that sparked us the rest of the game. Ashley Abair was able to relax in the circle for the win. I’m proud of how we bounced back and executed defensively,” says head coach Sarah Harman .
In the top of the second, SAGU was able to score two runs off of two Bacone errors.
BC was able to pick up one run in the bottom of the second and two runs in the bottom of the third. Going into the fifth inning, the Lady Warriors were up 3-2.
In the fifth, SAGU picked up the two home runs that Harman mentioned. First up, Hannah Lee singled to center field. Next, Amber Gignac doubled to right field. On a 1-1 count, Kelsey Coburn hit a three run home run to center field. The next batter up, Kristin Stringer, homered to left field on a 3-2 count. The Lady Lions were able to pick up four runs in the top of the fifth.
Stringer went three for four at the plate. She had one home run, one RBI and one run scored. Coburn went one for four with three RBI’s and one run scored with her second homer of the season.
Ashley Abai r pitched all seven innings. She had one strike out while giving up 13 hits.
Next up for the Lady Lions, they will take on the top ranked team in the Sooner Athletic Conference on Saturday, April 9, 2016. St. Gregory’s University is currently ranked no. 3 in the NAIA and is 31-3 overall. Game time is at noon.
