The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) women’s soccer team remains undefeated with their 8-3 route against the Steers from Texas College on Thursday. The Lions scored early in the game and did not look back after that with 23 shots and 12 on goal. Freshman, Melissa Navarro and Messly Navarro had 6 goals combined, 4 coming from Melissa and 2 from Messly. Once again, goalie Sarah Palmer had a stellar game finishing with 5 saves. Her final save came in the last 48 seconds of the match to help close the door on the Steers. The Lions will get a four day rest before they are back on the field next Tuesday, September 4th in Longview, TX against LeTourneau University . The whistles will go off at 7 pm where the Lady Lions will take on the Yellow Jackets in a rematch coming off a 2-1 loss from last year.
The men’s team followed shortly after against Texas College. The Lions haven’t lost a game thus far and looked to keep that streak alive. SAGU started the game off on the right track scoring in the first 8 minutes, making it the only goal the first half. The Tigers made necessary halftime adjustments and scored 3 times in the second half and held the Lions to one goal for the games entirety. The Tigers handed the Lions their first loss of the season with a 3-1 win. Freshman, Heriberto Diaz scored at the 7:48 mark for his 7th point of the season. The Lions played well offensively with 12 shots on goal and 4 corner kicks. SAGU will look to bounce back tomorrow August 31st at home against Dallas Baptist University , the game will kick off at 5:30 pm
