San Antonio, Texas- March 2, 2016- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) track and field team competed at the Trinity University Invite in San Antonio.  Reigning NCCAA National Track Athlete of the Week, Destiny Garza , led the women’s team bringing home the gold in the 5000m run.  The meet was compiled with a hodgepodge of NCAA DI, DII, DIII and a couple of NAIA institutions.

Garza led the women’s team, competing in the 1500m and the 5000m.  She placed 4 th out of 31 runners in the 1500m and was just shy of her school record by .79 tenths of a second with a time of 5:00.88.  In the 5000m run, Garza finished in first place with a time of 18:12.38.  She finished the meet off with 15 points.

On the men’s side, there were six personal records set, one of which being a new school record. Jerry Nava reset the SAGU 5000m school record with his 16:02.14 performance, placing sixth overall and toppling his own record.

Earlier in the day, Nava placed 8 th in the 1500m with a personal record of 4:18.46. Jose Campos and Adrian Cedillo also got personal records.  Campos finished in 4:24.41 and Cedillo finished at 4:39.99.

Eric Jones set a personal record in the 800m with a time of 2:08.57.  He came in 11 th place overall but first in his heat.  In the 400m, Campos one upped his performance in the in the 1500m and finished with another personal record of 54.70.

Next weekend, on April 9, 2016, the teams will travel to San Angelo to compete in the David Noble/Angelo State Relays .
