Waxahachie, Texas- December 21, 2015- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) women’s basketball team is knee-deep in their season, but head coach Tiffany Phillips is looking ahead to the 2016-2017 year.  Phillips has announced the signing of Korede Ahmadu .

“This is a very big day for the SAGU women’s basketball program. To get a Division I caliber player to commit to and sign with SAGU is a huge accomplishment,” says Phillips, “Korede is an extremely great basketball player and she is an even better young lady. It isn’t easy to turn down Division I scholarship opportunities these days but Korede felt like God wanted her at SAGU and sees the bigger picture outside of the 4 years of basketball she will play for us.”

Ahmadu is originally from Nigeria but has spent the last three years playing for North Central Texas Academy in Granbury, Texas.  While at North Central, the 6’2 center has won two state championships and is a two time All-State Selection TAPPS.  She averages 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks a game.

On the evening of Ahmadu’s signing she played at Waxahachie Prep Academy.  Over half of her new team went to watch her play.  Ahmadu says that gesture meant the world to her, “When I saw the team walk into the gym to watch the game I felt so excited because they are more than just teammates, they are like sisters to me.  I am excited about the opportunity to play at SAGU.”

“When Coach Martinez and I walked in the school on her signing day every administrator and teacher stopped us to tell us what a wonderful person we were getting. I couldn’t be happier that she decided to spend the next 4 years with us,” says Phillips.

Currently, the Lady Lions are 6-6 for the season.  On Monday, January 4, 2016 SAGU will be back in action when they travel to play St. Thomas (4-6).
