Sooner Athletic Conference Southwestern Assemblies of God University
This season the SAC added two new teams to the conference in Central Christian College and Oklahoma Panhandle State .
Defending NAIA champion Oklahoma City University was the obvious choice among Sooner Athletic Conference coaches to win the 2017-18 league basketball crown. John Brown University , NAIA tournament qualifier last year, was picked second in the poll with 121 points and three first-place votes. Wayland Baptist finished third with 114 points and one first-place vote.
The remaining poll is as follows: Mid-America Christian was fourth with 102 points, followed by Science and Arts in fifth place with 83 points and Texas Wesleyan in sixth with 81 points. Southwestern Christian was picked seventh with 78 points, Southwestern Assemblies of God University was eighth with 65 points and newcomer Oklahoma Panhandle State was ninth with 48 points. Bacone was picked 10 th , St. Gregory’s 11 th , and Central Christian was slated to finish last.
Head Coach Tiffany Phillips knows the significance of preseason polls and understands that her team has a lot to prove, “We didn’t have the success that we wanted to have last year and did not finish the second half of the year very strong. We have to go out every single game and prove ourselves. We will have to earn respect with our hard work and our relentless effort. This team is special. They are all bought in and their mindset is to win. I believe in them and there is just a different feel around this season. I am excited to prove some people wrong.”
SAGU opens their season at home on October 31 st against Dallas Christian College at 5:00 PM. They will then travel to traditionally NAIA ranked Our Lady of the Lake on November 4 th .
