Muskogee, Oklahoma – February 4, 2017- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) women’s basketball team broke a six-game drought with a 71-68 win over Bacone College .  The Lady Lions are now 10-11 overall and 3-9 in the SAC.  Bacone is now 7-14 overall and 4-8 in the SAC.

Earlier in the season the Lady Warriors beat SAGU 47-42 at home.  According to head coach Tiffany Phillips , it was time for a win, “It wasn’t pretty but it was a win and our team needed that.  I told them before the game that it had been too long and I was ready to come into a happy locker room after the game and celebrate.”

Regardless of who held the lead in the first half, the game remained very close.  With 6:15 left in the second quarter, Bacone had the 26-18 lead.  SAGU was able to battle back and tie the game at 29-all with 1:54 left in the half.  By halftime, BC was ahead 32-31.

“We had to fight against some adversity with turnovers and fouls but we hit some big shots when we needed to down the stretch,” explains Phillips.  And she was right about adversity, in the first half alone, SAGU had 17 turnovers compared to Bacone’s eight.

Midway through the third quarter, SAGU’s Ebony Colbert made a basket to give SAGU the two point lead.  With 1:32 left in the third, Laken Ward hit a three pointer to give SAGU the 49-42 lead.

The Lady Warriors didn’t give up however and with 4:17 left in the game Bacone capitalized on a SAGU turnover and Cierra Mills gave BC the two point lead after making two free throws.

SAGU quickly tied the score once again after a basket made by Laken Ward .  Ward also hit a three pointer to take the four point lead.  From that point on, SAGU stayed on top for the remainder of the 3:03 left in the game.

Charity Page had a double/double with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Laken Ward added 19 points.

Bacone’s Cierra Miles scored 23 points.

“I am hoping this win gives us some confidence going into this three game home stretch and we can catch fire to finish off this season,” says Phillips.

On Thursday, February 9, 2017, SAGU will host University of Science & Arts-Oklahoma at 6pm.  Nearly one month earlier, USAO topped the Lady Lions 72-52.
