Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) welcomed in Langston University to the Sheaffer Center on Saturday afternoon. The SAGU Lions (9-8, 4-6) were trying to ride the wave of their impressive win over CCCK on Thursday night. SAGU (9-8, 4-6) was able to handle their business as they defeated Langston (5-9, 3-7) by a score of 75-67.

Top Performers

  • Lexi Rich ( SR/ San Antonio, TX ) lead the Tigers in scoring with 28 points.
  • Alexis Casher ( JR/Irvington, AL ) piled up 13 rebounds.
  • Kiara Glenn ( JR/Ennis, TX ) dished out a game-high 6 assists.
  • SAGU won the rebounding battle 51-44.
  • The teams combined for 50 total turnovers in the game.
  • SAGU shot 44% from the field (29-65) including 58% (7-12) from beyond the arc.

Lions Review

  • Sydney Meador ( JR/Denton, TX ) got the Lions on the board with a little over two minutes into the quarter as the Lions found themselves down 5-2.
  • Two free-throws by Rich gave the Lions a 10-9 lead midway through the first quarter.
  • SAGU took a 19-16 lead into the 2 nd quarter.
  • Rich hit a couple of baskets to make give the Lions some breathing room at 23-19.
  • The quarter was full of turnovers and sloppy play, but Tamera Derrough ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) knocked down two clutch three-pointers to give the Lions a 33-26 lead.
  • Glenn hit another long-distance shot right before the half as the Lions led 38-30 at the half.
  • The teams traded baskets until Rich gave the Lions their largest lead after a three-pointer 52-39 with 5:06 left in the third quarter.
  • SAGU took a 56-45 into the final quarter.
  • Langston battle back to trim the lead down to 62-56 with 4:48 left in the game.
  • The Lions held on tight to the lead as it turned into a one-possession game 66-63 with 3:12 remaining.
  • Clutch free throws by the Lions put the game out of reach and wrapped another victory for SAGU 75-67.

SAGU (9-8, 4-6) will begin a three-game road trip beginning with a battle against Oklahoma Panhandle State University on January 3 rd at 6:00 pm.
