Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Baseball team was in action Friday afternoon as they played a doubleheader with Houston-Victoria (Texas) (HUV). The Lions (10-3, 0-0) took both games against the Jaguars (1-5, 0-0) by the score of 7-0 in the first game and 12-6 in the second game.

Game 1

Top Performers

  • Ben Bills ( JR/York, PA ) pitched seven scoreless innings. He gave up just 3 hits while striking out 8 HVU batters.
  • Ryan Cole ( JR/Longview, TX ) had an excellent game at the plate as he had 3 hits, 3 RBI, and scored 1 run.
  • Hunter Watson ( SO/Whitney, TX ) and Sonny Boyd ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) led the Lions in runs scored with 2 each.
  • SAGU hit .320 as a team, while their defense and pitching held the Jaguars to batting just .125 collectively.

Lions Review

  • Bills gave up a double in the first inning but rebounded nicely striking out the side in the first inning.
  • Joseph Vazquez ( SO/Katy, TX ) reached first base after an HVU error, but the Lions couldn’t score. The teams remained scoreless moving to the 2nd inning.
  • Bills only needed 6 pitches to get through the 2 nd inning, but the Lions were retired in order in the bottom of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
  • Cole pushed the first run across on a bunt in the bottom of the 3 rd inning. Vazquez and AJ Munoz added a couple of singles to push the lead to 4-0 heading into the 4 th inning.
  • The Lions followed with 3 more runs in the 4 th inning thanks to a double by Cole.
  • The Jaguars managed only three hits through seven innings as Bills helped the Lions maintain the lead and ultimately win 7-0.

Game 2

Top Performers

  • JV Verdin ( FR/Dallas, TX ) had 3 hits drove in 4 RBI and scored 3 runs for the Lions.
  • Hunter Watson managed 3 hits of his own.
  • Ben Bills was also able to score 3 runs for SAGU in a game full of offense.
  • The Lions’ bats were hot as they combined to hit .351 as a team.
  • Augustin Martinez ( SR/Sugarland, TX ) got the win as he gave up 7 hits, 4 earned runs and 5 strikeouts.

Lions Review

  • The Jaguars jumped on the board quickly in the 1 st inning stringing together 3 hits and scoring 2 runs to put SAGU on their heels.
  • SAGU answered back in the 2 nd inning scoring 3 runs on three-straight singles.
  • The Lions posted 4 runs in the bottom of the 3 rd inning with assistance from HVU in the form of a walk and an error.
  • SAGU’s 7-2 lead was cut into as the Jaguars scored twice in the top of the 4 th inning to make it 7-4 Lions.
  • The Lions halted any thoughts of a comeback in the bottom of the 4 th inning as they added 5 runs to take a commanding 12-4 lead over HVU.
  • SAGU went scoreless for the rest of the game, but HVU was only able to manage 2 more runs. The Lions took the game 12-6 and the 2-0 sweep of the Jaguars.

What’s Next

SAGU will be back in action at home tomorrow February 15 th at 12:00 pm as they battle Texas College. The second game of the doubleheader will begin 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
