The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) volleyball team split on their weekend trip to Oklahoma . Game one was at Southwestern Christian University (SCU) Friday night where they took care of business 3-1, the next day they received their first loss in almost two months against Oklahoma City University 1-3.

SCU played the Lady Lions very tough scoring 23 or more points in three of the four matches; 25-14, 27-29, 26-24, 25-23. Leading the way were senior hitters, Kali Shaw and Suzanny Figueiredo with 23 total points each. Shaw had 19 kills with 14 digs and 3 assists. Figueiredo finished 18 kills and nine digs for SAGU. Sophia Ivy came into the weekend receiving another setter of the week award this weekend and proved why with another big game on 49 assists during the win. Specialist, Celi Bruce had a game-high 27 digs and broke the record for all-time digs in a career. She now a total of 1903 digs as a Lion and 1st all-time in that category. Bruce currently is ranked 40th in the nation with 5.130 digs per game during the 2018-2019 season. The winning streak was extended to 22 games with this win before going into Saturday’s game.

Going across town in Oklahoma City sat the 2nd place opponent Oklahoma City University Stars who were 22-3 and 13-2 in the SAC before entering this game. The Stars set the tone early with a 27-29 win in set one that led into the second set, 15-25. The Lady Lions were defeated in set four 11-25 after taking one, 25-19. Kali Shaw, Suzanny Figueiredo and Jancee Akers had double-digit kills in this match while Shaw, Figueiredo, Bruce and Nikki Almaguer did the same with digs. Here is what Coach Hank Moore had to say about the loss, “They played well and we struggled in serve receive on this tough loss. We just need to rebound and get back on the winning trail. I’m proud of my kids, and it is great to be a SAGU Lion.”

The Lions have a one-game lead in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings with three games left in the season. They will travel to Arkansas to face John Brown University Friday night at 7 pm.
