The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) volleyball team had another undefeated weekend for the third weekend in a row. The Lady Lions complied a 3-0 record with two big Sooner Athletic Conference wins and a stellar non-conference battle to improve their record to 14-1 and 6-0 in conference play. They are in 1st place with the 6-0 record in front of 5-1 teams Oklahoma City University, Texas Wesleyan University , and John Brown University .
- Game 1 of the weekend stood other SAC 5-0 opponent Oklahoma City University. This was a close match the whole way through by winning sets 1 and 2, 25-22. Giving the Lions a run for the money, the Stars took set 3 17-25 before losing the fourth set to SAGU 25-23. Senior hitters, Kali Shaw and Suzanny Figueirdo had big games with 39 kills together, 20 from Shaw and 19 from Figueirdo. Jancee Akers added 9 kills on the lone game Friday night to go along with Sophia Ivy’s , season high, 50 assist. Nikki Almaguer put together a much-needed season high, as well, with 16 digs against OCU.
- Game 2 took place Saturday morning which would be SAGU’s toughest game in over 3 weeks when Southwestern Christian took the Lions to 5 sets. The Eagles came out strong putting together a good game plan and taking the 1st set 17-25. Then the Lady Lions made adjustments winning sets 2 and 3, 25-18 and 25-15. Looking to take care of business, the Eagles put together a good run in the 4th set that the Lions would be unable to come back from, 21-25. SAGU won a much needed set 15-7 to solidify set 5 and another solid conference win to give them a 6-0 SAC record. The Lady Lions had five players with 10+ digs; Kali Shaw, Celi Bruce , Sophia Ivy, Nikki Almaguer, and Suzanny Figueirdo. They also had five players with five or more kills; Kali Shaw, Madeleine Hartline , Alexis Mealer , Suzanny Figueirdo, and Jancee Akers .
- Game 3 continued the trend and was all Lions, winning 3 straight sets against Oklahoma Wesleyan University by scores of 25-22, 25-11 and 25-15. Before this weekend OKWU had an impressive 10-4 record with wins over multiple SAC members. The Lady Lions had three players with three or more blocks on the day; Madeline Hartline, Alexis Mealer, and Jancee Akers. Kali Shaw and Celi Bruce had 23 digs combined, Shaw having 13 and Bruce with 10. SAGU had an impressive 0.337 hitting percentage as a team and still sit in the top 10 in the nation for assists per game, digs per game and kills per game.
Their next matchup will be against 5-1 SAC opponent, Texas Wesleyan University for a battle between the 1st and 2nd place teams. This game will be one you don’t want to miss in Waxahachie at 7 pm against the Rams.
