Commerce, Texas- April 17, 2016- The final regular season track meet for the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s and women’s track teams was one for the record books.  Three men and one woman set school records at the East Texas Invitational hosted by Texas A&M University-Commerce .

“What a season! Nine school records were set by five individuals this spring and these kids have so much more in the tank,” exclaims head coach Jason Covarrubias , “It take three years to set the tone for a program and as we close out our third complete year, the fruit is beginning to show. This is just the tip of the iceberg for every one of these kids.  They make me proud.”

Jose Campos and Adrian Cedillo started the meet off with the 3000m Steeple Chase.  This was the first running of the steeple chase in school history.  Campos finished in 8 th place with a time of 10:56.17 and Cedillo crossed the line in 10 th place at 11:21.06.

Eric Jones broke his own 400m SAGU record with a time of 53.76.  Campos also competed in the 400m dash on a short rest and set a personal record with the time of 54.48.

In the 5000m, Destiny Garza continued her winning ways, capturing the gold medal and breaking her previous school record with the time of 18:07.81. Jerry Nava closed out the evening for the Lions with an impressive silver medal finish with a time of 15:39.31.  Nava shredded 23 seconds but more importantly cracked into the NCCAA national qualifying outdoor list for the 5000m.

Destiny Garza and Jerry Nava will compete on May 13th and 14th at the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Outdoor Track Championships hosted by Shorter University in Rome, GA.  Both will compete in the 10,000m and the 5,000m at the championships.  Garza also qualified in the 1500m.
