The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lion Track teams are back in action this weekend at the Bobby Lane Invitational at the University of Texas-Arlington . This will be the first time in program history that both squads will compete in a Dallas/Fort Worth area track meet.
The women will be traveling runners to compete in the 400m, 800m, 1500m, and the 3000m Steeple Chase, Alyssa Holder (Maypearl, TX ) rejoins the team after the conclusion of the SAGU Lady Lions’ Basketball team successful run, as the program’s first three-sport athlete (cross country, basketball, and track), she will compete in the 100m and 200m events. The men will be taking five men to compete at UTA also in the 200m, 800m, 1500m, 3000SC and the 5000m. Head Coach Jason Covarrubias on this weekend, “We are excited to be back in action and especially to compete in front of our hometown supporters. The field is loaded with athletes from all levels, from several NCAA Division 1 and 2 along with four NAIA Sooner Conference teams. This will be a nice test to see where we are mid-season and hope that they take advantage of the field to push them passed the NCCAA and NAIA National Championship standards!”
The SAGU Lion track teams will take a few weeks off from competition to focus on what Coach Covarrubias calls his, “Championship Phase” of the training continuum. They will next compete at the East Texas Invitational hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday and Saturday, April 12th-13th in Commerce, TX .
