Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) track th Trinity University
The upcoming season is the third year for outdoor track. For cross country and track coach Jason Covarrubias , he believes the two separate seasons hold great benefits to both teams, “I have always believed that track has more benefit to cross country than just track itself. We run cross for track and track for cross! Our team is very young and we are coming off the best cross country season in school history, so you can imagine how excited I am about this season.”
Three athletes have already qualified for the NAIA Marathon in May; Destiny Garza , Jerry Nava and Robert Herrera . With three national qualifiers, this season is already record-breaking before it even begins. Also, Garza is looking to defend her NAIA National Marathon Champion title for the second year in a row.
“We have beefed up our schedule this year to push our athletes, starting off with this weekend’s meet at Trinity University in San Antonio. It is rare to find a competitive 10k early in the season,” explains Covarrubias, “A few other notable meets are Mississippi College, Steven F. Austin, Southwestern (KS), and the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays.”
Covarrubias mentioned his young team of athletes, but it is important to note the young team is led by a solid group of seniors. Destiny Garza , who is a two time Outdoor National Champion (NCCAA) and three time Outdoor National Qualifier. Jerry Nava who is a two time Outdoor Naitonal Qualifier, along with senior male captain Jose Campos .
