Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) track Sketchers Carl Knight Invitational NCCAA National Championship Jose Campos Cody Walker

According to head coach Jason Covarrubias , everything played into SAGU’s favor on Friday, “It was a perfect day for running.  The weather was great, with no wind.  The stadium was underground.  It was an overall really good race and I couldn’t ask for a better outcome.”

All season long, Jose Campos and Cody Walker have been fighting for the school record in the 1500m.  Campos held it previously and then Walker broke it by 0.6 of second.  Friday it was the same story.  Campos ran the 1500m and finished in 4:06.00, Walker was right behind him with 4:06.06.

Both Walker and Campos beat the 4:08 qualifying time for the NCCAA Championships.  They will now be able to compete in Shawnee, Oklahoma in mid-May.

Also in the 1500m, Raul Olmos ran a personal best of 4:12, beating his old PR by eight seconds.

SAGU’s Jerry Nava broke his own school record in the steeple chase.  He finished in 9:56, beating his other record by 10 seconds.

More personal records were set in the 5k including Fille Kinyamahanga and Caitlin Cruz .  Kinyamahanga finished 21:53.22 and Cruz was right behind at 22:27.28.

All-American Destiny Garza ran the 5K and finished sixth overall and with a season best.  She crossed the finish line at 18:03.45, 13 seconds faster than she has ran all season long.  Her time also is a new SAGU record in the 5k.

For the men, Adrian Cedillo also competed in the 5k and set a personal record of 16:57.05.

“We are in our championship phase of competition and we are getting the speed going,” explains Covarrubias, “I tell them that times are that annoying little brother to effort.  But eventually times catch up just like that little brother does.”

SAGU Track has a busy week ahead, with three different races.  Jerry Nava and Destiny Garza will be competing in California in separate races.  The rest of the team will be at McMurray on Thursday, April 13, 2017.
