Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Theatre is performing Jean Lenox Toddie’s White Room of My Remembering ” this upcoming weekend in the Black Box Theatre.

The play will show Friday, October 5th and Saturday, October 6th at 7:30 PM. There will also be a 3 PM showing on Sunday, October 7th. Admission is free, but tickets are required for admission.

“I’ve seen this play two or three times and have since wanted to do it because I love its feel and its message,” says Ronnie Blount, Director and Assistant Professor in both English and Theatre.

The play centers around main character Jessie, who returns to her childhood farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania after her parents pass away. She brings along her friend Margaret, and the two decide to put the house up for sale.

While Margaret searches for a real estate agent, Jessie has conversations with her younger self, her dead parents, and a former beau.

“This is an intimate play about family relationships and the choices we all face, and I feel the black box is the perfect venue for a play of this type,” said Blount.

This play is different from others that SAGU Theatre has performed because it takes place more in the past than it does in the present.

“‘White Room of My Remembering’ is what I would call a memory play where the protagonist struggles with her past choices, and these struggles seem to impact her future choices,” Blount says.

According to SAGU Theatre student Rachel Eubanks, some of the roles were double-casted because of how small the cast is, which will give more people the chance to perform.

She and the rest of the theatre department look forward to sharing this play with SAGU students and the rest of the community.

“I’m excited for this play because it’s a bit different than the others we’ve done; it’s a very light-hearted, touching play all the way through, and the style of it is something we’ve never done before,” she says.
