Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) took the field for a doubleheader to finish their three-game series with Wiley College (Texas). The Lions (8-3,0-0) were able to sweep the day and the series downing the Wildcats (4-3,0-0) by the score of 6-0 in the first game and 3-2 in the second game.
Game 1
Top Performers
- Kolby Clark ( FR/Waco, TX ) pitched 7 shutout innings giving up only 4 hits while striking out 10 batters.
- Hunter Watson (SO/ Whitney, TX ), Ben Bills ( JR/York, PA ), and AJ Munoz ( SR/Waxahachie, TX ) all had three hits.
- Eric Crum ( FR/Kyle, TX ) posted 2 runs, 2 RBI for the Lions.
- SAGU hit .333 for the game.
Lions Review
- Clark gave up a hit to the first batter but struck out two batters on his way to a scoreless first inning for SAGU.
- Joseph Vazquez ripped a double to right field, but the Lions could not capitalize during the bottom of the first.
- Clark struck out the side in the bottom of the second.
- Eric Crum doubled to left scoring Bills, and Watson to give SAGU the lead 2-0. Sony Boyd ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) knocked in another run to push the lead to 3-0.
- The Lions added two more runs on the third inning to take a 5-0 lead into the fourth inning.
- Clark continued to stifle the Wildcats offense allowing just one hit over the next three innings.
- Crum touched home once more in the sixth inning to give the Lions a 6-0 lead going into the seventh inning.
- Clark gave up two more hits in the top of the seventh but escaped with no damage was done as the Lions shut out the Wildcats 6-0.
Game 2
Top Performers
- Dennis Smith ( JR/Jewett, TX ) pitched five innings giving up 6 hits and just 1 earned run. Logan Mann ( JR/New Bloomfield, PA ) eventually got the win for SAGU.
- There were six different Lions to register a hit in the game.
- Joseph Vazquez ( SO/Katy, TX) , JV Verdin ( FR/Dallas, TX ), and Kyle Coolidge ( SR/Newberry Park, CA ) all knocked in 1 run for the Lions.
- The Lions hit just .222 as a team
- SAGU overcame 4 errors during the second game.
- SAGU got themselves in some trouble, but Wiley ended up standing 9 baserunners.
Lions Review
- Wiley had two hits to start the game but couldn’t do any damage as they ended their half of the inning with zero runs.
- The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when AJ Munoz scored on a batted ball to give SAGU a 1-0 lead.
- Wiley had an answer in the top of the fifth inning as they gave up 2 runs thanks in part to two errors.
- The Lions trailed going into the bottom of the seventh inning when Boyd scored to tie the game. Vazquez stepped to the plate with two men on and doubled to left field to give the Lions another walk-off win.
What’s Next
SAGU (8-3, 0-0) will play a doubleheader against the University of Houston-Victoria on February 13 th . The first game will start at 12:00 pm and the second game will follow approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
