Spring football for the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football team has begun with a big spring game ending on April 13th followed by a time of fellowship with parents and players. Head Coach Ryan Smith states,” Our goal this spring is to grow on and off the field. We are really focusing on the QB situation since we lost CJ but I feel good about our three guys on campus. Garry Powell, Romeo Balboa, Brylen Watson have all look good through the first week. At the wide receiver spot we have to replace Jeremy Carr and Sam Northey but with Justin Allen, Patrick Hall, and Dakota Gilley we feel good about our chances to replace our WR core will be held by two of last year’s leaders Blaine Rowe and Bryant Dotson . On the offensive line, we will be with a veteran group with guys like Luke McBride, Hayden Evans and Evan Greathouse.

At running back, we return Stephan Free, Michael Bledsoe, and Jayten Taylor and we get back Darion Carter and Randy Gober then we expect Brandon Moffett and CJ Jenkins to add production.

Defensively, our defensive line has gotten a boost with the return of Jordaan Coleman and Trey August adding a solid group with guys like Derek Shelby and Keandre Belcher .

The Linebackers and defensive backs are a group I will be watching closely to see how they come together. We have athletes everywhere at these positions. At corner, we have Maliek Golden, Bryce Bailey, and Ced Dale . At safety, we have Christian Cross and redshirt freshman Jaylen Haynes . Several other guys will contribute to this defensive backfield for the upcoming season. At linebacker, we have All-American Landon Jones coming off a season in which he recorded 136 tackles. Along with foundational guys like Coby Roach our defense should be something special.

We are placing a lot of emphasis on special teams and expect this to be a strong point for us with Tlung Hmung handling kicking, and we expect Tyler Lightbody to handle punting.”
