SAGU Senior Lexi Rich had 39 points in the Season Opener

Texarkana, TX – Texas A&M University Texarkana (TAMUT) initiated their women’s basketball program on Friday against the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU). The Lady Lions spoiled the TAMUT program debut with a 97-64 victory. For the Lady Lions (1-0, 0-0) it was the opening game of their 2019-2020 basketball season.

Notable Performers

  • Lexi Rich (SR/San Antonio, TX) began her senior year where she left off last season scoring thirty-nine points. Rich completed a double-double with ten rebounds and also added six assists.
  • Sidney Meador (JR/Denton, TX) score 20 points and added 6 rebounds.
  • Eva Attunawa (SR/Lagos, Nigeria) garnered 18 points and tied Rich with 10 rebounds.
  • SAGU shot 35.1% from the three-point stripe (13-37).

How it Happened

  • TAMUT took an early lead of 12-5 after five minutes of play. Unfortunately for Texarkana it was all Lady Lions after that point. SAGU outscored TAMUT 17-3 to close out the first period.
  • The second period was all SAGU as they scored 32 points to take a 54-34 lead to halftime.
  • TAMUT had five turnovers in the first half and shot 34.4% from the field. SAGU had seven turnovers and shot 42.9% in the first half.
  • By the end of the third quarter the Lady Lions had scored 80 points and were leading by 31 points.
  • The Lady Lions coasted from there outscoring TAMUT by a score of 17-15 in the fourth period.
  • If there was a downside the Lady Lions committed 16 turnovers to TAMUT’s 13 turnovers for the game.

The Next Step

  • On Friday, November 8 th and Saturday, November 9 th the Lady Lions will host the SAGU Classic. 8 teams will participate, four from the Red River Athletic Conference and four from the Sooner Athletic Conference. On Friday SAGU will play at 2:00 versus perennial NAIA women’s basketball powerhouse Our Lady of the Lake University. Saturday the Lady Lions will play TAMUT again beginning at 11:00 am.
