Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Baseball team took the diamond for the first time this season as they hosted Randall University (RU) on Friday afternoon for a pair of games. The Lions (1-1, 0-0) split the games with Randall (1-1, 0-0). SAGU took the first game 6-1 while dropping the second 13-7.

Joseph Vazquez totaled 5 runs and 4 RBI against Randall

Game 1:

Top Performers

  • Joseph Vazquez ( SO/Katy, TX ) went 3-3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.
  • Kyle Coolidge ( SR/Newberry Park, CA ) and Tanner Lindle ( SR/Coppell, TX ) each scored 2 runs for the Lions accounting for the rest of the scoring.
  • Dennis Smith ( JR/Jewett, TX ) was the winning pitcher logging 5.2 innings pitched. He surrendered 1 earned run off 4 hits. He struck out four batters while walking only just one.
  • SAGU hit .333 as a team totaling 6 runs on 7 hits with no errors.

Lions Review

  • Things didn’t start the way SAGU wanted as the first RU hitter reached first base on a walk.
  • Smith got the next two batters to fly out before striking out the final hitter of the inning.
  • The Lions quickly found themselves with two out in the bottom of the first before Ben Bills ( JR/ York, PA ) was hit by a pitch.
  • RU got on the board with 1 run in the top of the third, but SAGU put up 3 more in the bottom of the third thanks to triple by Vazques and a double by Lindle.
  • The Lions got through two more innings holding RU scoreless.
  • Vazquez homered to centerfield in the bottom of the 5 th inning.
  • Jordan Ambriz ( FR/Poteet, TX ) came in relief and got the final out to secure the first win of the season for the Lions.

Game 2:

Top Performers

  • Vazquez continued his hot start with two more runs and 2 more RBI.
  • Justin De Los Santos ( FR/Corpus Christi, TX ) also added 2 RBI of his own
  • A.J. Munoz ( SR/Waxahachie, TX ) was able to score 2 runs for the Lions.
  • Agustin Martinez ( SR/Sugarland, TX ) logged 4 IP while giving up 3 ER. He also struck out four batters.

Lions Review

  • Munoz scored the first run for either side on a wild pitch in the first.
  • The Lions had a monster 3rd inning as they posted 5 runs to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
  • RU scored 4 runs in the 5 th inning to put the pressure back on the Lions.
  • RU followed it up with 9 runs over the next two innings to take control of the game and ultimately win 13-7.

What’s Next

SAGU (1-1, 0-0) and Randall (1-1,0-0) will be back at it again tomorrow to finish off their series. The first game will begin at 12pm with the second contest scheduled for 2:00 pm.
