Hobbs, N.M.- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Softball team took the field looking to sweep a four-game series against the University of Southwest (SWU). The Lady Lions (7-10, 0-0) were able to split the doubleheader with the Mustangs (2-20, 0-3) winning the first contest 2-0, but fell in the second game 3-2.

Game 1

Top Performers

  • Alana Ortega (FR/Houston, TX) went 3-4 and scored a run for the Lady Lions.
  • Maddie Watson ( SO/Frisco, TX ) and Brycelyn Richards ( SO/Italy, TX ) each had 2 hits.
  • Rosie Guadarrama ( JR/ Cushing, TX ) and Richards each knocked in a run for SAGU.
  • The Lady Lions hit .321 for the game.
  • The teams combined for 4 errors.
  • Autumn Graham ( JR/Flower Mound, TX ) got the win pitching 7.0 innings allowing 6 hits, no runs, walking one batter and striking out one as well.

Lions Review

  • The Mustangs threatened early with a hit and an error by SAGU. They had a runner at third base, but Graham was able to get out of the jam.
  • SAGU was hitless through two innings. SWU got another runner in scoring position but again couldn’t capitalize.
  • Watson got the Lady Lions their first hit of the game and was able to advance to third later in the inning, but the game stayed scoreless.
  • Ortega singled to lead off the inning and then Richards singled to get the Lions on the board 1-0 after 4 innings.
  • Taylor Steele ( FR/Corsicana, TX ) came around to score on a wild throw by the Mustangs.
  • Graham had retired six straight batters until SWU got a hit in the 5 th inning.
  • SAGU lead 2-0 in the 6 th inning as Graham found herself in trouble after a double had two runners in scoring position. She settled down and got the last two batters to fly out to end the threat.
  • The teams combined for three hits in the 7 th inning but no runs as the Lady Lions were victorious 2-0.

Game 2

Top Performers

  • Watson went 3-3 led the Lions in hits. Ortega and Ashlyn Teran ( SO/Normangee, TX ) were right behind her with 2 hits each.
  • Kayla Milstead ( SR/San Diego, CA ) led the way with 2 RBI for the Lady Lions.
  • Ortega, Richards, and Teran all scored a run for SAGU
  • SAGU hit .333 for the game.
  • Kassandra Vargas ( SO/Galena Park, TX ) pitched 6.0 innings giving up 8 hits, and 4 earned runs

Lions Review

  • Richards singled to left with two runners in scoring position but only got one run in as the Lady Lions hopped out to a quick lead.
  • The Mustangs pulled out a little bit of everything using a combination of hits, a SAGU error, and a sacrifice to score 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 3-1 lead.
  • Milstead tripled in the third to tie the game 3-3.
  • The 4 th and 5 th innings featured two hits each for both teams with no runs as the squads remained tied at 3-3.
  • An extra-base hit by SWU provided them with the go-ahead run to make it 4-3.
  • SAGU singled twice to start the 7 th inning. The tying run was in scoring position, but Richards flew out to end the game.

What’s Next

SAGU will travel to play a doubleheader with Bacone College on Wednesday, March 11 th . The opening game will begin at 2:00 pm.
