The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) softball team split with the Lady Aggies from Oklahoma Panhandle State University with two wins each. OPSU won both games on Friday and the Lady Lions won both games on Saturday. SAGU is now 23-23 overall and 18-14 in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) which keeps them in fourth place; one game above Texas Wesleyan University for fifth and two games above OPSU for 6th.
Game one on Friday ended 5-6 with the Lady Aggies scoring off of a walk-off single to give them the win in the bottom of the 8th inning. Rhian Journey was the lone Lion with a double-hit game going two for four and being one of the five SAGU runs. Janely Cruz went one for four being two of their runs on the first game of this series. Casey Waterman pitched a complete game going 7.2 innings giving up three runs with the other three coming from errors.
Game two the Lady Lions started off scoring two in the first inning than remained scoreless the rest of the game. OPSU was clutch again scoring three in the bottom of the sixth inning to giving them another win from behind. Cruz batted 1.000 going three for three finishing the day with four hits total. Journey and Waterman had the other hits with one each. Waterman had a perfect first five innings allowing zero earned runs.
Day two SAGU knew they had to win the day or OPSU could catch them in the standings. The Lady Lions got off to a big start to game three scoring seven runs in the first three innings combined. Journey, Waterman, Rosie Guadarrama, Kayla Milstead, Maddie Watson, and Destinee Vindiola each had hits to give them their seven hits and seven runs. The Lady Aggies had 11 hits but SAGU’s defense was able to stop them from turning them into runs. Waterman got her 16th win of the season which is 22nd in the NAIA as a whole.
The Lady Lions tied the series up with a huge offensive day with 18 hits and 12 runs to pump their record back up to .500. Journey went four for five with two RBI’s and one run, Cruz was two for five with RBI’s and two runs, Cheyenne Fults had one hit and was one of their twelve runs, Waterman had a double-hit game going two for four with two RBI’s, Guadarrama continued her hit streak going two for four with one run, Milstead also had a double-hit game going two for four with an RBI and one run, Valentino went two for four with two RBI’s and two runs while Watson and Magdaleno each had one hit each. Natalie Voss was recorded with the win pitching five innings allowing seven earned runs striking out five Lady Aggies.
SAGU’s next SAC matchup will be against the fifth place opponent Texas Wesleyan University with both games being Friday at 12 pm and 2 pm in Fort Worth, TX .
