Waxahachie, Texas – February 8, 2017 – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s soccer team has added two new midfielders for the 2017 season.  Hernaniz “Nani” Herrera-Perla and Hugo Areola have both signed letters of intent for the upcoming school year.

Herrera-Perla is a familiar name for SAGU fans, Hernaniz is the younger brother of SAGU Team Captain Juan Herrera-Perla.  Herrera-Perla is a student-athlete at Denton Ryan High School and also plays for FC Dallas 99’.

“I am very fortunate to commit to a school that not only will help me develop my game, but also my walk with Christ.  SAGU is a school that I have kept track of because of my brother.  I am excited and eager to get to work next fall,” says Hernaniz.

Hernaniz’s older brother, Juan is excited to keep the SAGU tradition in the family, “As the first person in my family to go to college I am ecstatic to have my brother here with me.  It'll be the first time we play together so I am looking forward to that and helping him become a better soccer player.”

Hugo Areola will graduate from Lloyd V. Berkner High School.  He also plays as a midfielder for FC Dallas.

Areola is thankful for the opportunity to continue his education as well as his playing career, “Signing with SAGU is a great achievement.  One of the proudest moments of my life is knowing I'll be able to play four more years doing the sport I love while getting an education.”

Herrera-Perla and Areola are the first two signees of the 2017 recruiting class.  In 2016, the Lions had a 9-8-2 record.
