Waxahachie, Texas – October 17, 2015 – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s soccer team toppled Wayland Baptist University , 2-1. SAGU is now 6-7-1 overall and 1-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC). WBU falls to 6-4-2 overall and 2-3 overall.
“I’m delighted with the performance of all the guys in what was a very tough game. It wasn’t pretty throughout but they all dug deep and worked their socks off to ensure a great win,” says assistant coach Mark Meredith .
SAGU was able to score the first goal only after a bit of controversy. Isai Bonilla-Velasquez tried to send a cross that the goalie caught going backwards into the goal. The ball made it across the line inside the goal, so it was declared a goal.
With 35 minutes left in the second half, senior Robert Ambrosie scored off of a pass across the box by Bonilla-Velasquez. SAGU extended the lead to 2-0.
About three minutes later, WBU was able to score a goal, cutting SAGU’s lead to one.
“We had a bit of luck with the first goal and then pushed and created a great team goal for the second. After they grabbed a goal back we defended with great fight till the end, with an amazing last gasp save from goalkeeper Cesar Espana , ensuring the SAGU win,” explains Meredith.
WBU had 15 shots compared to SAGU’s six. Espana had six saves while allowing one goal.
On Tuesday, October 20, 2015 SAGU will host Mid-America Christian University . MACU is currently 5-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the SAC.
