Waxahachie, Texas- October 30, 2015- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s soccer team is now enjoying their best season ever, after beating Bacone College (3-10 overall, 0-8 in the SAC), 3-1.  The Lions improved to fifth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC).  With an overall record of 8-7-1, 2015 is the winningest season on record for SAGU.

For the first half, it was a defensive battle as both teams remained scoreless.  The first goal of the game didn’t come until the 70 th minute of play.  Head coach Clem Oancea was pleased with the win despite being disappointed that the Lions couldn’t score earlier, “This was not one of our better games but we did enough to get the points needed.  The end result is what we were looking for.”

The first goal came from Juan Ramon Cardenas , after chipping the goalie. Parker Sturgeon picked up the assist.

Seven minutes later, Robert Ambrosie scores off of a penalty kick, making the score 2-0.

The Warriors didn’t let up, and with eight minutes left to play J. Sinclair scored Bacone’s only goal.

In the 86 th minute of play, SAGU scored one final time after Sammy Duarte’s shot was blocked by BC’s goalie, Ambrosie reshot and scored the deflected ball.  The last goal marked Ambrosie’s 16 th goal of the season.  He leads the SAC in goals scored and is ranked no. three in the NAIA for total game winning goals (6) and no. 11 in total goals scored (16).

SAGU goalkeeper Cesar Espana had nine saves, with one goal allowed.

The Lions will continue their home stand when they host the no. two team in the SAC, John Brown University (11-5-1 overall, 7-1 in the SAC) on Saturday, October 31, 2015.  The men’s team will play at 3:00pm.  On Saturday, the Lions will honor the seniors.
