Waxahachie, Texas- January 26, 2016- Southwestern Assemblies of God University is excited to announce that they will host the 2016 Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) basketball tournament.  The tournament is scheduled March 2-5, 2016.

“The ability to showcase the talent of the SAC for the city of Waxahachie in a tournament format is a great opportunity,” explains athletic director Jesse Godding , “This is the first time the SAC Tournament has moved below the Red River for a number of years and SAGU is honored to have been chosen to host.”

Year in and year out, the SAC produces some of the best basketball in the NAIA.  On the women’s side, Oklahoma City University will come into the tournament as the reigning NAIA National Champions .  For the men, Wayland Baptist University won the 2015 SAC tournament.

Currently, on the men’s side three teams are nationally ranked; #7 Mid-America Christian , #12 Texas Wesleyan University and #20 Southwestern Assemblies of God University .

For the women two teams are currently nationally ranked; #14 Oklahoma City University and #21 Wayland Baptist University.

10 schools and 20 teams will be participating in the SAC tournament.  Both men’s and women’s teams from; Mid-America Christian, Texas Wesleyan, Oklahoma City, Wayland Baptist, University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma, Southwestern Christian, John Brown, St. Gregory’s, Bacone and SAGU .

On Wednesday, March 2, 2016 there will be four play-in games at 2pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm.  On Thursday, March 3, 2016 there will be a full day of basketball with eight games will be played starting at 8am and continuing at 10am, noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm and 10pm.  On Friday four games will be played at 1pm, 3pm, 6pm and 8pm.  And finally on Saturday, March 5, 2016, the Championship games will be played at 4pm and 7pm.

This is SAGU’s third year to be a part of the Sooner Athletic Conference and the Lions first time to host the SAC Tournament.  In the past three years the men’s basketball team has advanced to the NAIA National Tournament.
