Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Baseball team hosted Ottawa University (Kan.) (OTT). The two squads began a four-game series with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Lions (4-2, 0-0) split the doubleheader with OTT (1-1, 0-0). SAGU was crushed 21-0 in the first game, but the Lions rebounded with a 5-4 victory in the second contest.

Game 1

Top Performers

  • Kolby Clark ( FR/ Waco, TX ) pitched 4 innings giving up 6 hits and 5 earned runs.
  • Clark and Blaine Manucy ( FR/ Vinton, LA ) led the Lions pitchers with 3 strikeouts.
  • Joseph Vazquez ( SO/ Katy, TX ) had the lone hit for SAGU during the game.
  • The Lions had a tough game defensively as they committed 5 errors

Lions Review

  • The opening two innings saw the score tied 0-0
  • Ottawa got on the board first in the top of the third.
  • OTT poured it on scoring 17 runs over the next three innings to leave little of the outcome.
  • SAGU surrendered 3 more runs in the top of the 7 th inning.

Game 2

Top Performers

  • Agustin Martinez ( SR/ Sugarland, TX ) went six innings for the Lions and had a mixed bag of results. He gave up 4 runs on four hits and walked four batters while also striking out four.
  • Logan Mann ( JR/New Bloomfield, PA ) got the win for SAGU pitching one inning surrendering no hits, and walking only one batter.
  • Eric Crum ( FR/ Kyle, TX ) knocked in two runs for the Lions.
  • Sonny Boyd ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) came in as a pinch-runner and scored two runs.
  • SAGU batters were able to draw 7 walks and capitalized with three extra-base hits.

Lions Review

  • Ottawa seemed to carry over some of the offense from the first game as they posted 2 runs in the top of the first inning.
  • SAGU quickly answered back in the bottom of the first with a run of their own, cutting the deficit in half.
  • The game was tied going into the 3 rd inning thanks to another run by SAGU in the 2 nd inning.
  • The Lions led after four innings by a score of 4-3.
  • OTT tied the game again in the top of the 6 th inning after both teams failed to score in the 5 th inning.
  • SAGU was clutch when they needed to be as they pushed across one run in the bottom of the seventh to salvage their day and get a big win.

What’s Next

SAGU (4-2, 0-0) and Ottawa (1-1, 0-0) will wrap up their series tomorrow February 1 st beginning at 11:00 AM with the second game to follow approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
