Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s (SAGU) Southwestern Missions Association (SMA) will host a 5k race, the Turkey Trot, on Thursday, November 16th. All proceeds will go to the SMA Giving Project to build a playground for disabled children in Moscow, Russia.
This year’s SMA Giving Project is called the Davai Project , after the Russian word for “go.” Alex Hall, the treasurer of SMA, says that funds raised will be used by members of an Assemblies of God Church in Moscow to reach their local community. “We are enabling the church members who will facilitate the playground to ‘go’ into their neighborhood and spread the Gospel,” he says.
The cost to participate in the Turkey Trot is a minimum $5 donation. Student Dormitories will compete with one another to raise the most funds. Staff and faculty may select a dorm of their choosing to join in raising funds.
The first 150 to sign up for the event will receive a free t-shirt. The top three males and top three females from student runners along with the top three males and top three females from faculty and staff runners will receive gift cards from local and corporate businesses.
Pre-race activities, which include live music and a warm-up session, will begin at 3:30 p.m. The race will take place at 4 p.m. in front of the Farmer Administration building, and staff and faculty may leave their workplace at 3:30 p.m. to participate. Following the race, an award ceremony for the top three men and top three women will commence at 5 p.m.
The Turkey Trot aligns with the university’s core values of community building, mission-mindedness, and personal wellness. SMA President, Elizabeth King says that she is hoping that the event will exemplify unity within the SAGU community. In addition, SMA is hoping that the event will help to bring the SAGU community together to support missions and in building a fundraising tradition that can be used by multiple campus departments in the future.
