Waxahachie, Texas – August 18, 2015 – This summer Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s ( SAGU ) Business for Missions organization and alumnus Joshua Weiss from CrossTalk International traveled to India and Sri Lanka to use their business knowledge to train others to develop small scale businesses.
Business for Missions (BFM) taught micro-business management to entrepreneurs and offers advice to established companies. They also visited local businesses, churches, orphanages, and hospitals to teach business and disciple through Crosstalk International’s “Today with God” curriculum. Business Department Chair LaSharnda Beckwith, Ph.D., said, “We believe there is an opportunity where we can go beyond our tithe to help people who are in need and may not have resources that we are privileged to have in America.”
During the sessions, the team and translators led sessions on leadership, goal setting, organizational structure and entrepreneurship.
The goal of BFM is to create profitable and sustainable micro-businesses, add value to communities and help create local jobs. Through those efforts, BFM strives to decrease poverty, improve the quality of life, produce positive social change and speak the message of Christ.
During the 2015 outreach, BFM also established a charity to support orphanages in India and Sri Lanka.
SAGU Senior Bethany Krock said, “I learned so much during this trip. These experiences go beyond the classroom. Even though the knowledge I have gained helped me teach, the chance to practice what I have learned and gain so much more insight on a different culture is priceless.”
