As Hurricane Harvey continues to devastate areas of southern Texas, Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) is responding through numerous relief efforts. These efforts include the opportunity to donate to Convoy of Hope and volunteer along with intercessory prayer through the Student Missions Association (SMA) .
“Many of our students, faculty and their families have been affected by Hurricane Harvey’s terrible destruction,” says Rennae de Freitas, Assistant Program Director of SMA. “Though we are beginning the regular routines of starting the Fall semester, it is impossible to ignore the needs of our neighbors that are suffering in Houston.
Faculty, staff and students will have the opportunity to donate towards Convoy of Hope during morning chapels. All of the funds received go towards Convoy of Hope and their relief efforts. Students can also donate online to Convoy of Hope.
SMA has organized a special prayer meeting in the Jeter Prayer Room this afternoon from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This will be a “come and go” prayer time when students can come in between classes for a few minutes or stay for the duration of the allotted time. Along with prayer, SMA is actively pursuing local partnership to respond with student volunteers for the relief efforts. SMA will be working alongside the Residential Life department to help supply volunteers. De Freitas says that the plan right now is to volunteer after the initial response has died down. “That is when there will be a dire need for volunteers and we plan to be ready,” she said.
The decision to provide these efforts was inspired by students. Lance Meche, Dean of Students, said that students have been passionate about providing relief to our neighbors suffering in Houston from the wake of Harvey. Students contacted Meche asking if SAGU was making organized efforts as an institution for disaster relief.
“It has been pretty amazing how empathetic and caring our students have been regarding the issues at hand,” Meche said. “They seem to be very informed of what’s going on and want to help in any way they can.”
The SAGU Football team also organized a fundraiser for Convoy of Hope at Chipotle in Waxahachie yesterday evening in which 50 percent of the proceeds were donated Convoy of Hope.
“God is at work in Houston and we have the joy to be a part of His work by praying, giving and going,” de Freitas said.
