Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) is now opening up its residence halls for all incoming students who will be affected by harsh traveling conditions during Hurricane Harvey .
While the bulk of incoming students would not be moving in until later this weekend, check-in is available for students who live along the coast and would be affected by the storm.
Eddie Davis, Vice President of Admissions, said that the Residential Life department has been monitoring the storm’s conditions during the past few days. They realized that the height of the storm will be taking place during peak traveling time for SAGU students.
Lance Meche, Dean of Students, said that the initial thought to open the dormitories early occurred to him during a prayer meeting this past week. “It came across my mind to reach out to Vice President Eddie Davis to see if we could provide an opportunity to let some students return early to ease the students’ and parents’ minds,” said Meche.
The call was later made to open up the dormitories earlier than expected to allow students to make the trek to Waxahachie before traveling conditions are worsened by Hurricane Harvey.
“We are very grateful to get ahead of the storm,” Davis says.
Sophomore Alexis Frausto was one of many students who was relieved to hear of the news. Frausto is from the Houston area and was fearful of making the three-hour drive to Waxahachie during Hurricane Harvey.
Fortunately, Frausto was able to move in earlier than expected to avoid the storm’s path.
“It was a big stress reliever,” Frausto said. “In Houston, it’s not supposed to stop raining until Wednesday so we were kind of worried. We called the school and they said to come in as early as you can. I was really happy.”
Meals will be provided to students on campus who will be arriving earlier than expected due to inclement weather from the storm.
