The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) announced Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) as the 2018-19 recipient of the Sports Ministries Award . The purpose of the Sports Ministries Award is to recognize NCCAA institutions having significant spiritual outreach through the utilization of athletic ministries. SAGU Director of Athletics, Dr. Jesse Godding , received the award on behalf of SAGU at the annual convention of the NCCAA.

“This award is a testament to the determination of our athletic personnel to be a part of the mission of SAGU. It is necessary for a coach to teach strategy and technical skills to players to be ready for the field of competition. At SAGU, the coach is also responsible to take student-athletes beyond the fields and courts to experience servanthood. God has blessed SAGU with a group of head coaches who are intentional about the spiritual formation of student-athletes. I am humbled to work with them” stated Godding.

Over the course of the 2018-2019 academic year, SAGU teams, as well as coaching staff, were involved in missions trips and local continued support of the surrounding communities. SAGU student-athletes served missionaries, police officers, firefighters, nursing homes, elementary schools, the Salvation Army Boy & Girls Club, Operation Christmas Child, the YMCA, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization . SAGU student-athletes also participate in a unique ministry headed by former SAGU athletic trainer Jaroy Carpenter entitled SAGU GameDay Outreach. GameDay Outreach utilizes student-athletes from multiple sports to run school assemblies and impact students from elementary to senior high.
