Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Music Department hosted the Southwest Metroplex Invitational Honor Band on February 9, 2019. The band performed in front of an audience of approximately 300 persons.
The honor band consisted of about 80 students from five surrounding areas/Independent School Districts (ISDs). The ISDs included Brock ISD , Grandview ISD , Maypearl ISD , Millsap ISD , and Peaster ISD .
The students took to the stage in the Hagee Communication Arts Center (HCC) , a state-of-the-art performing arts center serving local music organizations and orchestras in Ellis County . The Waxahachie Symphony Association regularly utilizes the facilities for concerts and the Ft. Worth Symphony Orchestra , Dallas String Quartet and the Jazz Ambassadors from the Army Field Band in Washington D.C. have all performed in the facilities’ Performance Hall.
Numerous SAGU music students helped with the event volunteering to assist with sectionals, lunch, and auditorium stage set-up. Dr. Tyrone Block, SAGU’s Music Department Chair, helped coordinate the event.
“The students and staff were commended by all of the directors on their exemplary organizational skills and attention to detail,” says Dr. Block.
According to Dr. Block, the Band Directors from the five ISDs expressed that the building’s facilities and the university’s hospitality exceeded their expectations. Michele Kahne, Guest Conductor for the performance, and Russell Brown, Grandview ISD Director, expressed a desire to bring their schools’ concert band to the Hagee Communication Center to record for the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Texas Honor Band .
“Because of the superior building, faculty, and students, the impression made on the honor band students, directors and community will be a positively lasting one,” says Dr. Block.
