Former Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU ) President, Dr. Delmer Guynes, was recognized for an award in his name in Missions Chapel on Wednesday, September 26. His son, Dr. Del Guynes, Dean of SAGU’s College of Music and Communication Arts, received the award on his behalf.
“As one of his children, I can say, with the rest of my siblings that the award is fitting,” said Dr. Del Guynes. “We are just very grateful to be associated with the Missions program here at Southwestern.”
The award will be given to a senior student who is an Intercultural Studies Major, Minor, or AA, and must demonstrate excellence in academics, Christian character, promise for future service in the mission field, and a passion for missions. The Missions Department faculty will choose the nominees and eventual recipient of the award.
Dr. Delmer Guynes served as the president of SAGU from 1982-1984 and then again from 1989-2000. During his presidency, SAGU was able to experience incredible growth spiritually, through enrollment, and in the finances. He was also able to establish the Harrison Graduate School and additional academic program offerings.
Under his leadership, SAGU rebounded from a period of low enrollment and financial difficulty and achieved a record enrollment of 1,672 students.
As a missionary, Dr. Delmer Guynes’ complete devotion and reliance on the Lord would guide him through his time in China during a period of isolationism along with financial difficulties. When one door closed, God faithfully opened another for him to walk through in faith.
Dr. Guynes’ commitment to missions work is reflected in the university’s core values and has been furthered fostered by SAGU’s Missions Department. Nelson de Freitas, SAGU’s Director of World Ministries, said that Dr. Guynes influence in missions and specifically, the university’s support of missions is clearly evident today.
