Springfield, MO – December 29 th , 2017 – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball team won their first game in the Assemblies of God Classic against the Evangel Crusaders 80-78, on Friday evening.
The Lions played a strong first half at a slower pace than Evangel University. The score was left at 51-45 at the end of the first half. The Lions understood that they must take a few more opportunities early in the second to remain within striking distance of a win. As the second half began to unfold, SAGU steadily pushed for every opportunity at a basket. In the last few minutes of the game, Josh Swearingin scored the game-winning shot. This shot and Cameron Hill’s free throw in the last 3 seconds of the game gave SAGU the 2 point lead at the end of regulation. SAGU won the game against Evangel 80-78.
Head Coach Delton Deal said, “I am very proud of the way we finished the game with poise. Josh Swearingin came up big with the game-winning shot. We also played great team defense to the end of the game with a stop. We are growing daily and are looking forward to what is ahead of us.”
The SAGU Men will be playing their final game in the AG Classic on December 30, 2017, at 3:00 P.M. against NAIA Division II nationally ranked number one Cornerstone University .
