Shawnee, Oklahoma – February 5, 2016 – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball team needed a win over St. Gregory’s University in order to break a four game losing streak.  The Lions were able to execute and come out with a win, topping SGU 65-61.  SAGU is now 15-8 overall and 6-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC).

“Win or lose I always enjoy playing SGU because Coach Martin and his kids are nothing but classy. It was a great game and we consider ourselves blessed to be victorious,” says head coach Donnie Bostwick .

The Lions got off to a slow start, scoring only six points in the first nine minutes of the game.  By that point, SGU was in the lead 18-6.  In a matter of two minutes, SAGU was able to cut SGU’s lead to four. Keyunta Watkins and Jason Gentry hit timely three pointers to help out.  With 40 second left in the half, Gentry hit another three to come within three.  Going into halftime, SGU was up, 33-30.

Coach Bostwick believes SAGU’s defense is what got them back into the game, “We scrapped and competed harder on the defensive end all night. Keyunta Watkins, Josh Swearingin and Isaak Rowe were in the middle of a lot of that effort.”

With 15:55 left in the game, SAGU’s Josh Swearingin hit a basket to take the lead once and for all.  From that point on SAGU was on top.  That didn’t mean that the Cavaliers didn’t make it a game.  With 19 seconds left, SGU’s Kevin Ritchie hit a three pointer to come within two.  SAGU’s Emmanuel Adoyi hit two free throws with 17 seconds left to win the game.

SAGU’s Rishaad Alexander led in scoring with 18 points and two steals. Isaak Rowe added 14 points. Emmanuel Adoyi added 12 rebounds, seven of which were offensive rebounds.

SGU’s Kevin Ritchie scored 21 points.

On Saturday, February 6, 2016, SAGU will host Oklahoma City University at 5pm.  A little over two weeks ago, SAGU topped OCU in a 78-75 overtime victory.  OCU is currently ranked no. 25 in the NAIA.  The game will be broadcast live at SAGU.tv.
