Oklahoma City, OK- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) took on #1 ranked Oklahoma City University (OCU). The Lions (10-10, 5-8) were unable to pull off the upset as the Stars (21-0,13-0) continued their dominance as they rolled SAGU by the score of 82-54.
Top Performers
- Lexi Rich ( SR/San Antonio, TX ) scored a team-high 16 points.
- Only two other Lady Lions scored in double-figures. Kiara Glenn ( JR/Ennis, TX ) scored 14 and Sydney Meador ( JR/ Denton, TX ) pitched in 12 points of her own.
- Alexis Casher ( JR/Irvington, AL ) and Phillipa Greene ( JR/Freeport, Bahamas ) tied for the team-high in rebounding with nine each.
- SAGU held their own on the boards as they narrowly lost the rebounding battle 44-42.
- SAGU had a tough shooting night as they went just (22-76) for 26% shooting and managed just (8-34) 23% from behind the arc.
Lions Review
- Casher pulled down an offensive rebound and scored on a putback to get the Lady Lions on the board.
- Rich would hit an early three-pointer to give SAGU and early 7-5 lead with 4:29 to go in the first quarter.
- Thanks to a steal by Rich and score by Meador near the end of the quarter SAGU would take a 16-9 lead into the second quarter.
- OCU score five quick points to make it a one-score game at 16-14
- Green would answer again with her second three-pointer to extend the lead 21-14
- With 4:41 left before halftime, the Lions saw there lead evaporate as the Stars tied the game at 23-23.
- OCU used a 14-4 run to close the half to take a 37-27 into the break.
- The Stars came out with another 13-2 run to open the third quarter to give themselves a comfortable lead.
- SAGU couldn’t cut into the lead as they managed just 10 more points by the end of the third quarter, but OCU had built a 62-39 lead moving into the final quarter.
- SAGU would hit a trio of three-point field goals to start the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t get a stop. The deficit remained at 23 points (73-50) with 4:57 remaining.
- The Lady Lions managed only four more points the rest of the way as OCU took the win 82-54.
What’s Next
SAGU (10-10, 5-8) will travel back to the Sheaffer Center to take on Southwestern Christian (Okla.) (14-6, 6-6) in another Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) battle. The game will take place on Saturday, February 8 th at 2:00 pm.
