Alexis Mealer led the Lions with 9 kills against OCU

Oklahoma City, OK – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) took on top seed Oklahoma City University (OCU) in the semifinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Tournament Friday in Oklahoma City. SAGU (23-9, 17-5) saw their season come to an end as they fell short against OCU (32-1, 20-0) in four sets (13-25, 25-23, 15-25, 15-25).

Lions Top Performers

  • Alexis Mealer ( SO/Arlington, TX ) had a team high 9 kills in the match.
  • Ava Myers ( FR/Round Top, TX ) and Jancee Akers ( SO/Rsoenberg, TX ) each finished with 6 kills of their own.
  • Sophia Ivy ( Round Rock, TX ) set the stage for her teammates with 26 assists.
  • Nikki Almaguer ( JR/Waxahachie, TX ) battle hard to keep the Lions afloat with a team high 22 digs.

Lions Review

  • SAGU weathered the storm of the Stars early in the first set as they were down 6-4. Unfortunately, for the Lions they didn’t score again until a service error by OCU to make it 11-6. OCU steadily built their lead until they eventually took the set 25-13.
  • SAGU came out in the second set and lead 3-1, but was quickly matched with 6 unanswered points by OCU to make it 7-3.
  • Thanks to a couple kills by Meyers and Mealer and a couple errors by OCU the set was tied at 14-14. A kill by Ariel Horton (    ) put SAGU on top 21-20. Thanks to a combination of attack and service errors by OCU, SAGU took the set 25-23.
  • The Lions carried momentum into the third set as the tied the set up 13-13. The Stars went on a 12-2 scoring run to close the set in dominant fashion.
  • The start of the fourth set was not promising as SAGU found themselves down 5-1. A key block by Madeline Hartline ( SR/Round Rock, TX ) and Sophia Ivy brought the Lions closer at 13-11. OCU player Marijana Bjelobrk outscored the entire SAGU team 5-4 and pushed OCU to take the set and win the match.

What’s Next

  • SAGU will participate in the NCCAA Central Region Tournament with the dates TBA.
