Kansas City, Missouri – March 14, 2017 – It is an early spring tradition for Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball coach Donnie Bostwick , a trip with his team to the NAIA National Championship . For the past five seasons, SAGU has loaded the bus and taken the court at the Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City.
Bostwick doesn’t overlook the fact that every time SAGU qualifies for the tournament it is an honor, “My father went home to Jesus in 2011. He had two items on his bucket list; he wanted to fish with the grandkids one more time, he also wanted to make one more national tournament. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Every trip is special in its own way. Just getting here is an amazing accomplishment, often a miracle.”
On Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at 10:45am, the Lions will play Talladega College i n the first round of the National Championship. The game will be a close match-up. SAGU is currently ranked no. 16 in the NAIA and Talladega isn’t far behind with a 20 th place ranking.
The Lions are currently 23-9 and TC is 22-10. On average, SAGU is scoring 79.6 points per game and Talladega is averaging 85 points a game. One thing of interest is that TC has an average scoring margin of 16 points per win.
When preparing for Talladega, Bostwick hasn’t taken any sort of new approach. It’s all about execution this late in the season, “At this point in the season you have seen just about every offensive set and style of play possible. It is about playing well when it matters. We just focus on what we do and the little things. There is no doubt they are very good and it will be a challenge.”
All of the NAIA National Championship games will be broadcast live by the NAIA. You can watch live at NAIANetwork.com . If the Lions win on Wednesday, they will play on Thursday (3/16/17) at 10:45 am. They will play the winner of Carroll (Montana) and Mount Mercy (Iowa).
