Waxahachie, Texas- March 22, 2016- It may be the start of spring, but for the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football team, it is looking a little like fall. The Lions are in the middle of 2016 spring practices.
For the next three weeks the Lions will practice daily starting at 3:30pm. Spring practices will end with a spring game on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 10am. The spring game will be on SAGU’s campus.
In 2015, SAGU had the best season on record going 8-3 and winning the NCCAA Victory Bowl . Head coach Frank Tristan is excited to look ahead with his veteran group, “The spring will be fun because we are building off of energy from the fall but we still have key defensive spots to fill.”
The anchor for the defense will be returning NAIA All-American D’Vonn Brown . The Lions will return five defensive starters all together.
“From 2014 to 2015, SAGU has improved offensive production by nine points per game,” explains Tristan, “With nine returning starters offensively the potential is even higher for the SAGU offense in 2016.”
SAGU has 85 players involved in spring ball, nearly 70 of those are returners from the 2015 squad.
