Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) welcomed in Oklahoma City University (OCU) for a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Lions (18-10, 3-4) were swept by the Stars (17-8, 3-1) by the score of 12-3 in the first contest and 16-4 in the second contest.
Game 1
Top Performers
- Ben Bills ( JR/York, PA ) went 2-3 with 2 RBI and one run scored.
- Hunter Watson ( SO/Whitney, TX ) also went 2-3 on the day
- Jared Anderson ( JR/Houston, TX ) had one hit, 1 RBI and one run scored, and Sonny Boyd ( SO/Mansfield, TX) added a hit and run of his own.
- SAGU hit just .214 for the game
- Bills, Kolby Clark ( FR/Waco, TX ), and Alex Aparicio ( FR/Cushing, TX ) combined to pitch 7.0 innings and gave up 17 hits, 9 earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts in the loss.
Lions Review
- OCU opened up with an extra-base hit, followed, a single to score the first run. SAGU committed an error in the inning which led to the Stars taking a 2-0 lead to the bottom of the 1 st inning.
- Watson led off the inning with a hit but was put out on a Boys fielder’s choice. Bills was the next batter and promptly deposited his fourth home run of the season over the left-field fence to tie the game 2-2.
- The Stars answered right back with two home runs of their own to take the lead 5-2.
- OCU wasn’t done as they added 2 more runs in the top of the third all coming with two outs.
- The Lions had two hits in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn’t cut into the lead.
- Anderson hit SAGU’s second home run in the bottom of the 4 th to cut the lead to 7-3 OCU.
- The Stars’ bats would stay hot as they added on 5 more runs over the next two innings to go up 12-3.
- The Lions were unable to get anything going offensively as the logged no hits the last couple of innings.
Game 2
Top Performers
- JV Verdin ( FR/Dallas, TX ) led SAGU with three hits and scored a run.
- Bills and Adrian Martinez ( SO/Laredo, TX ) each had one hit and one run scored with Bills adding an RBI.
- Kyle Coolidge ( SR/Newberry Park, CA ), Tanner Lindle ( SR, Coppell, TX ) and Perry Sanders ( FR/DeSoto, TX ) all recorded an RBI for the Lions.
- Augustin Martinez ( SR/Sugarland, TX ) gave up nine hits, 7 earned runs and one walk in his 4.0 innings. He also struck out six batters.
- SAGU hit .367 for the game.
- There were a total of 29 hits between the two teams.
Lions Review
- Both teams were retired in order in the 1st inning and then each recorded their first hit in the 2nd inning.
- SAGU had a good 3rd inning as their first five batters reached base on their way to a 3-0 lead over the Stars.
- OCU posted 7 runs in the top of the 4th inning which included a 3-run home run. The Lions used three singles in the bottom of the 4th but weren’t able to get any runs as they trailed 7-3.
- The Stars used six hits, including two doubles in the top of the 5th inning to hang 7 more runs on the board to blow the game wide open at 14-3.
- Verdin scored off a Stevenson single to steal one back for the Lions, but SAGU was still down big 16-4 and would go on to lose by that same score.
