Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football Texas College Central States Football League

SAGU quarterback CJ Collins set one personal record against Texas College, while tying a school record.  Collins threw for 443 yards, nearly tying the school record of 446 yards held by Jeremy Fowler in 2009.  He also tied the school record for touchdown passes in a game with five.  He now shares the record with Fowler set in 2009 against Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

Offensively, the Lions had a strong ground game as well. JP Lowery ran the ball 13 times and garnered 94 yards and one touchdown. Ricky Bickham also had one touchdown for the Lions on the ground attack.

Defensively, SAGU held Texas College to one score for the game with that coming at the end of the first quarter. Texas College would not score again and had trouble against the dominant SAGU defense.

The Lions kicker, Tluang Hmung is still perfect on the season for PATs. He is currently ranked number one in the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association (NAIA) in PAT kicking percentage (100%).

Head football coach Frank Tristan was pleased with the way his team responded after last Saturday’s loss versus East Texas Baptist University and the overall play of the football team. Coach Tristan says, “I was really proud of our total team effort. Offensively, we had some early miscues but picked up the Texas College blitzes well enough to allow CJ (Collins) to get the ball down the field. The receivers were able to win their one on one matchups and had some big plays. Defensively, we moved some guys around and they really responded. Coby Roach and Landon Jones had big games for us. I was pleased with our coverage on special teams. We played very consistent today.”

Collins was 18 of 31 passing, throwing for 443 yards and five touchdowns.  Senior JP Lowery had 13 carries for 94 yards and one touchdown.  Sophomore Michael Bledsoe had seven carries for 49 yards and senior Ricky Bickham had four carries for 16 yards and one touchdown.

Jeremy Carr had nine receptions for 117 yards receiving, for a long of 63 and one touchdown.  Justin Allen had four catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

For the defense, Coby Roach had 11 tackles, 1.5 of those for loss.  Darnell Martin had five tackles, 1.5 for loss.

Tluang Hmung was a perfect six of six for extra points and was two for three for field goals, kicking a long of 32-yards.

SAGU will take the 45 minute drive to Ft. Worth next Saturday to play the inaugural game between Texas Wesleyan, new member of the CSFL. The game will begin at 2:00 PM.
