SAGU Head Coach Frank Tristan is eager to have the hall of fame coach leading the offense, “Coach Harrell has an incredible resume and is an unbelievable football coach. But more impressive than his resume is character and integrity as a man of God. Our program and institution will be better because Sam Harrell is part of it.”

In 2005, Coach Harrell was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and ultimately had to retire from coaching in 2010.  Since his retirement, Harrell has traveled to Panama for Stem Cell treatments and has regained much of his health.

In 2014 he began coaching again at Fort Worth Christian .  He has been the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach for the past three season.

Over his 33 year career, Harrell has racked up numerous honors.  In 2013 he was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame .  In the same year he also received the Tom Landry Award from the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA).  He was the THSCA president in 2010 and the THSCA director from 2007-2009.  He was named the Texas 4A Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999.

Harrell lives in Ennis, Texas with his wife Kathy.  They have three grown sons who are all coaches; Zac, Graham and Clark.  Harrell also has six grandchildren.
