Week 3 for the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football team should be a good one as they travel to Plainview, TX Saturday to take on Wayland Baptist University . The Lions are 1-1 on the season and the Pioneers are 1-0 as they have both defeated Austin College for the 2018-2019 campaign. This matchup will kick off at 2 pm as the Lions have captured the past 4 out of 5 games against the Pioneers. SAGU dominated last year’s matchup 63-31, rushing for 7 touchdowns and 2 passing td’s coming from CJ Collins to go with 304 yards. JP Lowery and Justin Allen both had 3 rushing touchdowns each and on the defensive side, Jordaan Coleman did everything having 3 tackles, 1 interception, and 0.5 sack.

The Pioneers were led by many returners in their 24-14 home victory against the Kangaroos this past Saturday. The game started out with an interception from Waxahachie’s own Jamil Easley , he is a 5-8 redshirt sophomore which later turned into a field goal. Moments later, Austin College put together a good defense series forcing the Pioneers to punt but the Kangaroos muffed the kick in the end zone resulting in a touchdown to put them up 10-0 in the first quarter.  The Pioneers kept that lead the whole game but had first game flaws with their 9 penalties which let Austin College be within one possession in the fourth quarter.  The Pioneers scored with 1 second left on the clock resulting in the 24-14 final score. Nick Quintero is a sophomore quarterback from San Antonio Brennan High School who completed 10 of 16 passes for 152 yards. Brayln Kirby caught half of Quintero’s passes for the game, 5 grabs for a total of 67 yards. Their defense had nine tackles for loss and a pair of sacks, led by defensive lineman Andre Smith who had 6 sacks total.

Look for offensive players Michael Bledsoe, Stephon Free, Samuel Northey and quarterback CJ Collins to have a big game for SAGU after compiling over 500 yards and 9 touchdowns in this rematch from last season. Defensively, Marco Mathews, Landon Jones , and Coby Roach are leading the team in tackles with 14 each for the season.

Saturday we will see if the Lions will improve their record to 2-1 and sit in 1st place with a 1-0 conference record. The game will be broadcasted live on wbuathletics.com and on KWLD radio (91.5-FM) to keep up with the SAGU Lions first Sooner Athletic Conference game of the season.
