Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Baseball team hit the diamond again on Saturday afternoon for the rubber match against Wayland Baptist University (WBU). The Lions (16-7, 1-2) lost their first series in Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) as the Pioneers (18-7, 2-2) won an offensive explosion 10-8.

Ryan Cole had 4 hits, scored 3 runs and an RBI against WBU

Top Performers

  • Ryan Cole ( JR/Longview, TX ) led the Lions with 4 hits scoring 3 runs and drove in another run.
  • Hunter Watson ( SO/Whitney, TX ), Kyle Coolidge ( SR/Newberry Park, CA ), and Ben Bills ( JR/York, PA ) had two hits and one RBI each.
  • Joseph Vazquez ( SO/Katy, TX ), JV Verdin ( FR/Dallas, TX ), Eric Crum ( FR/Kyle TX ) and Sonny Boyd ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) combined for the rest of the SAGU runs.
  • SAGU’s bats were hot all game long as they hit .359 as a team.
  • Augustin Martinez ( SR/Sugarland, TX ) pitched 5.2 innings and got knocked around a bit giving up 5 hits, 5 earned runs, walking four batters while striking out five others.

Lions Review

  • Coolidge knocked in Cole to put the Lions on top 1-0 after one inning.
  • Martinez sat down the Pioneers in order to move to the bottom of the 2 nd inning.
  • The flood gates opened for the Lions in the bottom of the inning s they were raking singles left and right. They piled up 5 more runs to take a 6-0 lead into the 3 rd inning.
  • The teams went scoreless for the next two innings until WBU put two runs on the board in the top of the 5 th making it 6-2.
  • SAGU suddenly found themselves down 7-6 after the Pioneers put together a monster inning thanks to three hits and two SAGU errors that led to 5 runs.
  • WBU added 3 more runs over the next two innings to take a 10-6 lead into the bottom of the 9 th .
  • SAGU was down to their last three outs. Vazquez singled scoring Cole and then Tanner Lindle added his own single to score Vazquez.
  • Justin De Los Santos ( FR/Corpus Christi, TX ) flew out to center as the SAGU rally was halted and WBU took the win.

What’s Next

SAGU will be back in action Friday, March 6 th as they travel to play Southwestern Christian University (Okla.). The game will begin at approximately 2:00pm.
