Austin, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Softball team traveled south to Austin to visit Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) on Monday afternoon for a doubleheader. The Lady Lions (2-5, 0-0) were swept by the Rams (6-3,0-0) by the score of 7-3 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game.

Game 1

Top Performers

  • Ashlyn Teran( SO/Normangee, TX ), Sarah Sanders ( FR/Hillsboro, TX ) and Brycelen Richards ( SO/Italy, TX ) each had 2 hits each to lead the Lady Lions in hitting.
  • Sanders and Richards also drove in 1 run each.
  • Haidyn Ransdell ( FR/Alvarado, TX ), Kayla Milstead ( SR/San Diego, CA ) and Cheyenne Fults ( SR/Waxahachie, TX ) combined to score all the runs for SAGU.
  • SAGU hit .230 as a team
  • Autumn Graham ( JR/Flower Mound, TX ) pitched 5.0 innings for the Lady Lions giving up 8 hits, 4 earned runs while walking 3 batters.

Lions Review

  • SAGU started off well as Teran doubled to left-center field and Fults reach base on a walk. Unfortunately, the Lady Lions couldn’t push a run across in the inning.
  • HTU used the combination of two hits a couple of walks and SAGU an error to take a 2-0 lead as the teams moved to the 2 nd inning.
  • Alana Ortega ( FR/Houston, TX ) reached base on a misplayed ball in the top of the 2 nd inning which allowed Ransdell to score. The Lions cut the lead in half (2-1).
  • Graham gave up 2 hits over the next couple of innings, but no damage was done as the score remained 2-1 moving to the bottom of the 4 th inning
  • HTU put together three-straight hits in the bottom of the 4 th inning then were assisted by a wild pitch from Graham. The Rams converted that into 3 more runs and had some breathing room at 5-1.
  • The Rams added another run in the 5 th , but SAGU answered a run in the 6 th to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Lions added another run in the top of the 7 th inning, but it wasn’t enough as HTU took the game 7-3.

Game 2

Top Performers

  • Ortega led the way with 2 hits for the Lady Lions,
  • Morgan Valentino ( JR/ Red Oak, TX ) and Cheyenne Fults combined for the only two extra-base hits for SAGU.
  • SAGU combined to hit .269 as a team
  • Valentino managed to score the only run for the Lady Lions.
  • Kassandra Vargas ( SO/Galena Park, TX ) and Ashlyn Teran combined for 6.0 IP 8 hits, 4 ER, 2 BB and 4 SO.

Lions Review

  • Rosie Guadarrama ( JR/Cushing, TX ) singled past second base to start the game off, but SAGU would strand two runners and fail to score in the opening inning.
  • The first five HTU batters reached base as they were able to score to take a 1-0 lead on SAGU.
  • A couple of extra-base hits, a wild pitch and a SAGU error allowed the Rams to tack on 3 more runs in the bottom of the 3 rd inning.
  • Fults would provide a double in the top of the 6 th inning which was the only hit for SAGU in three innings.
  • An error by HTU in the 7 th allowed the Lady Lions to get on the board, but they couldn’t put a rally together. They went on to lose by a score of 4-1.

What’s Next

SAGU will be on the road again on Friday against Texas College. Their doubleheader will begin at 2:00 pm.
